The family business goes back to 1896, when Johann Baptist Abt's blacksmith and horseshoeing tradition began, and Abt Sportsline GmbH was founded in 1991.The brand name Apollo comes from the Gumpert Apollo, the car developed by Roland Gumpert. The sources used here do not explain why the name was chosen, so no meaning is claimed. After the 2016 purchase, the company itself took the name Apollo Automobil.
