| Name origin | The airline began in 1932 as Tata Airlines, part of Tata Sons. It became a public limited company named Air India on 29 July 1946, and its name was officially shortened from Air India International to Air India in June 1962. The name is simply the country's name attached to the carrier that became its flag airline. | SpiceJet was renamed from ModiLuft after Ajay Singh acquired the company in 2004. The sources used do not explain the choice of name, though the airline names its aircraft after Indian spices, which fits the brand. |
