Name originThe airline was first planned as British Atlantic Airways and was renamed Virgin Atlantic Airways soon after, when Richard Branson's Virgin brand came on board. Wikipedia does not record why the founders chose the new name beyond that change, and the Virgin name itself belongs to Branson's wider group. The name is descriptive. In 1972 the British Airways Board was created to manage the state-owned BOAC and BEA and two regional carriers, and in 1974 the four were merged under the single name British Airways.
