Name originDragonair combined the Chinese dragon with the word air. In 2016 Cathay Pacific renamed the airline Cathay Dragon, joining its own name to the existing Dragon element. The sources used do not give a formal explanation of the original name. The founders named the airline Cathay, an ancient name for China, and Pacific because Roy Farrell speculated they would one day fly across the Pacific. They also wanted to avoid the name Air Cathay, which had already been used in a comic.
