| Name origin | The sources used here do not explain why the founders chose the name Pan American Airways. The airline began as a Key West to Havana mail service, and in 1944 it expanded the name to Pan American World Airways to emphasize its worldwide destinations. It was shortened to Pan Am in a 1969 identity program. | TWA began as Transcontinental & Western Air, formed in 1930 from a merger of several airlines. The abbreviation TWA stayed in use as the airline grew international routes and became Trans World Airlines. |
