| Name origin | Qantas is an acronym of the airline's original name, Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services, written Q.A.N.T.A.S. when the company was founded in Winton, Queensland, in 1920. Fergus McMaster later said the name was created with Anzac as its inspiring factor. | The airline launched as Virgin Blue in 2000. The Virgin part comes from Richard Branson's Virgin Group, and Blue came from an open naming competition, as a play on the red livery and the Australian slang for a red-haired man. It became Virgin Australia in 2011. |
