Name originAir Canada was the long-used French-language name of Trans-Canada Air Lines. After a private member's bill by Jean Chrétien passed, the airline officially took the name on 1 January 1965.The name refers to the airline's original routes, which were all in Western Canada. Wikipedia states that this is what gave the airline its name, combined with the word jet for its aircraft.
