Name originThe Ariel name first appeared on a high-wheel bicycle patented in 1870 by James Starley and William Hillman. Wikipedia says the bicycle was named after Ariel, the spirit of the air, because its wheel hubs were suspended on wire spokes. The name was devised by engineer Geoffrey de Freville. Theories linked it to aluminium and the Latin vis, or to the Norse smith Alvíss, but de Freville rejected them and said the name had no meaning and was simply easy to pronounce in any language.
