Why Does Lamborghini Have a Bull on Its Logo?

The raging bull goes back to a 1962 visit to a Spanish fighting-bull ranch, and the founder's own star sign gets a mention too. Here is what is documented, what is not, and how the bull spread into the model names.

Short answer

What the Lamborghini logo symbol means

The bull on the Lamborghini logo is a raging bull that founder Ferruccio Lamborghini chose after visiting the Seville ranch of the fighting-bull breeder Don Eduardo Miura in 1962. He was impressed by the animals, and he was also a Taurus, a detail his biography mentions. He founded the car company in 1963, and most Lamborghini models have since been named after bulls or bullfighting terms. The company has not published a deeper meaning for the shield's shape or its gold and black colors.

The 1962 bull ranch visit behind the Lamborghini logo

Ferruccio Lamborghini was born in 1916 near Cento and built his fortune on tractors, starting Lamborghini Trattori in 1948. In 1962 he visited the Seville ranch of Don Eduardo Miura, a well-known breeder of Spanish fighting bulls. He came away so impressed by the animals that he chose a raging bull as the emblem for the car company he was about to found.

That is the whole documented story, and it is short. There is no known quote from the founder explaining exactly what he saw in the bull, and the sources used for this page name no designer for the shield. Retellings that add a specific conversation or a specific artist are not backed by those sources, so treat them as folklore.

Is the Lamborghini bull logo because Ferruccio was a Taurus?

Partly, according to his biography. The same sources that describe the ranch visit note that Lamborghini was a Taurus, and the bull is the Taurus symbol. It is a reasonable connection and it is repeated often, but it is worth keeping the two reasons in the right order: the visit to the Miura ranch is the event that is documented, and the star sign is a supporting detail rather than a stated company policy.

The company was founded in 1963 to compete with Ferrari. Lamborghini said he decided to build a grand tourer after his own Ferrari 250 GT needed repeated clutch repairs, and a snorting bull was a pointed contrast to Ferrari's prancing horse. That contrast is an observation about the two badges, not a quote from the founder.

How the Lamborghini bull logo became model names

The bull idea grew beyond the badge. The 1966 Miura is named after the Miura family of bull breeders, the same ranch world that gave Lamborghini his emblem. Most later models follow the theme with names from bullfighting, so the animal on the nose also explains the name on the back.

There is one famous exception. The Countach, styled by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, takes its name from a Piedmontese exclamation of astonishment, not from a bull. It still wears the shield on its nose.

Lamborghini logo history since 1963

The bull has stayed, while the frame around it changed. The archive shows a red shield with a charging bull above gray italic script in 1963, a glossy black shield with a chrome edge and a metallic bull in 1972, and a white shield with a black bull beside a heavy sans-serif wordmark in 1974. The gold-on-black version used today is archived at 1998, the year Volkswagen Group bought the company and put it under Audi.

The earliest mark in the archive, dated 1953, is not a bull at all but a triangle holding the letters F, L and C. The sources used here do not explain those letters, so reading them as initials is a guess. Lamborghini also uses a separate script wordmark, shown in the photo, with the small word automobili above the name on some versions.

Frequently asked questions

Lamborghini logo symbol questions answered

Why does Lamborghini have a bull as its logo?

After visiting the Seville ranch of fighting-bull breeder Don Eduardo Miura in 1962, Ferruccio Lamborghini chose a raging bull as the emblem for his future car company. He was also a Taurus.

What does the Lamborghini bull mean?

The documented meaning is the founder's admiration for Spanish fighting bulls. Lamborghini has not published a further symbolic reading of the bull, so claims about power or aggression are interpretation.

Is the Lamborghini bull related to the Ferrari horse?

Only through rivalry. Ferruccio Lamborghini started his car company in 1963 to compete with Ferrari, but the two animals come from unrelated stories. The Ferrari horse is the emblem of the pilot Francesco Baracca.

Why are Lamborghini models named after bulls?

Most Lamborghini names come from Spanish bullfighting, following the founder's bull theme. The Miura is named after the Miura breeding family, while the Countach is an exception named after a Piedmontese exclamation of astonishment.

Who designed the Lamborghini logo?

The sources used for this page do not name a designer. They confirm that Ferruccio Lamborghini chose the raging bull, and any claim naming a specific artist should be checked against a primary source.
