Name originNissan is a contraction of Nihon Sangyo, the Japanese name of Yoshisuke Aikawa's holding company, which was abbreviated that way on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in the 1930s. The automobile business that took the name grew out of Aikawa's group and the earlier DAT and Datsun cars.Subaru is the Japanese name of the Pleiades star cluster. Kenji Kita, the head of Fuji Heavy Industries, gave the name to the company's first passenger car project after none of the staff suggestions satisfied him. It was a Japanese word he said he had long held dear.
