Name originThe company began as a spin-off of the Toyoda family's loom business, and its early vehicles were sold as Toyoda. In 1936 the spelling changed to Toyota, reportedly because the new form took eight brush strokes to write in Japanese, a lucky number, and sounded clearer than the voiced original.Subaru is the Japanese name of the Pleiades star cluster. Kenji Kita, the head of Fuji Heavy Industries, gave the name to the company's first passenger car project after none of the staff suggestions satisfied him. It was a Japanese word he said he had long held dear.
