What Do the Letters ACBC in the Lotus Logo Mean?

The four interlocked letters in the middle of the Lotus badge are not a model code or a motto. They are the full name of the man who founded the company.

Short answer

What the Lotus logo symbol means

ACBC stands for Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman, the full name of Lotus founder Colin Chapman. The four letters are interlocked into one monogram and sit above the word LOTUS inside a rounded triangle on a round badge. A competing story says Chapman's first business partners, Michael and Nigel Allen, were allegedly told that the letters meant Colin Chapman and the Allen Brothers.

The roundel

A yellow disc ringed in chrome encloses the whole badge. In this version the ring and the glossy yellow give the emblem a metallic, enameled look suited to a nose or wheel-center badge.

What the Lotus ACBC monogram spells out

The badge pairs the brand name with four interlocked letters. Wikipedia states that they represent Chapman's full name, Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman. Around them sits a rounded triangle, set on a round field. Early versions in the archive are monochrome, and the colored enamel roundel shows up in the later archive files.

It is a personal signature in the middle of a car badge. Chapman put his own name on the cars he designed, and the company built its early reputation on light, simple, fast cars that carried his thinking about weight and handling.

Who was Colin Chapman, the Lotus founder?

Colin Chapman (1928–1982) built his first trials car in 1948, a modified Austin 7 he called the Mk1. Lotus Engineering Ltd was formed in 1952, and its racing arm, Team Lotus, went on to win the Formula One Constructors' title seven times. Road cars began as kits, which helped buyers avoid purchase tax, and the Elite, Elan, Europa, Esprit and Elise followed. Chapman owned the company until his death on 16 December 1982.

The Lotus logo Allen brothers story

Wikipedia adds a twist. Chapman's original partners, the brothers Michael and Nigel Allen, were allegedly told that the letters stood for Colin Chapman and the Allen Brothers. The same passage carries a “clarification needed” tag, and it describes an allegation about what the partners were told, not a company statement.

The documented reading is the founder's initials. The Allen version is best treated as a story about how the badge was explained to early partners. No source used here says who drew the badge or exactly when it was first used.

Why is the Lotus logo yellow and green?

The yellow-and-green scheme is visible in the badge from 1989 onward in the archive, and green with yellow stripes is a familiar sight on racing Lotus cars. Lotus has not published a symbolic meaning for either color, so any reading of them is interpretation. The 2019 version removes the chrome and shading and sets the same elements flat on a yellow disc, a change that came two years after Geely took a controlling stake.

The name itself is also unexplained. Chapman never confirmed why he called the first car Lotus, and one of several theories is that it refers to his girlfriend and later wife Hazel, whom he nicknamed his “Lotus blossom”.
