Short answer
What the Opel logo symbol means
The lightning bolt on the Opel logo comes from the Opel Blitz truck, a name coined in a prize competition and first applied to a truck presented in November 1930. Blitz is German for lightning. The truck's badge showed two stripes arranged loosely like a lightning symbol, in the form of a horizontally stretched letter Z, and that shape was simplified into today's horizontal bolt. Opel has not published a deeper meaning for the ring around it, so wider readings such as speed or energy are interpretation.

The Opel Blitz Ring

The ring
A thin circle frames the emblem and is crossed by the bolt. In the 1930s the ring held a stylized airship, and the bolt replaced that form by the end of the 1960s.
Highlighted on the logoThe Blitz bolt
Two offset horizontal strokes form the lightning bolt, read as a stretched letter Z. It comes from the Opel Blitz truck badge, and Blitz is German for lightning.
Highlighted on the logoThe wordmark
The name appears in wide-spaced, geometric capitals under the emblem. Opel has not named a typeface for it, so treat it as custom lettering.

The truck that gave Opel its lightning bolt logo
The name Blitz was coined in a prize competition and first applied to a new Opel truck presented in November 1930. The truck's logo used two stripes arranged loosely like a lightning symbol, in the form of a horizontally stretched letter Z. In the 1950s the bolt was simplified into a plain horizontal form, and that design still appears in Opel's current logo.
The photo shows the badge in place on a Blitz grille, with the name set beside a stylized bolt. Opel built Blitz trucks for decades. The last, the Blitz B, was launched in 1965, and Opel commercial vehicle production ended in 1975.
What the Opel bolt logo replaced
Opel's logo history is long and varied. The earliest known mark, from 1862, was the founder's initials, a bronze A for Adam and a red O for Opel. Around 1890 a redesign added the words Victoria Blitz, for the company's bicycles. Blitz appeared in the name then, but without a bolt. A 1909 redesign showed only the name Opel, and in 1910 the logo became a pointed oval surrounded by laurels.
In the 1930s passenger car hood ornaments resembled a stylized airship, and that shape later passed through a ring on the emblem. By the end of the 1960s the lightning replaced the airship, and the form and proportions have remained essentially unchanged since the 1970 version.
Opel logo history in the 1960s and 1970s
The bolt-in-ring is visible on the nose of this Opel GT. In 1970 the logo was drawn with a shortened bolt so it fit a yellow square, which let it stand beside the blue General Motors square in the era when GM owned Opel. The wordmark script was dropped in 1981.
The brand's own archive shows the sequence of the yellow-square version of 1987, the beveled chrome version of 2002 with a heavy yellow wordmark, a 2009 refinement with the name moved onto the ring, and the flat black version of 2023.
Why the Opel logo has a ring
The ring is the part with no published story. It was a ring in the 1930s, when an airship passed through it, and it stayed when the bolt took over. Opel has not said what it means, so any reading is guesswork. The current logo shown here is a flat black bolt cutting through a thin ring, with a wide-spaced OPEL wordmark below.
Opel is owned today by Stellantis, after General Motors sold it to PSA in 2017. The bolt survived each change of owner.
