Name originThe company is named for co-founder Louis Chevrolet, a Swiss-born racing driver and engineer. Louis and his brother Arthur partnered with William C. Durant, the ousted founder of General Motors, to start the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in 1911. Durant used the new company's profits to buy back control of General Motors a few years later, folding Chevrolet in as a GM division. The name pairs Abbott, the name of the Abbott Motor Company, with Detroit, the city where the cars were built. The sources consulted do not say who Abbott was, so the exact origin of the surname is not confirmed here. Naming a car after both a maker and a home city was common among early automobile builders.
