Name originThe company carries the surname of its founder, Enzo Ferrari. The name was first used for the racing team Scuderia Ferrari in 1929, and the company adopted the Ferrari name in 1945 after operating as Auto Avio Costruzioni because of a noncompete agreement with Alfa Romeo. The name combines the acronym A.L.F.A., for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, with the surname of the Neapolitan engineer and entrepreneur Nicola Romeo, who took control of the company in 1915.
