Name originThe Imperatore brothers began as Imperatore Bros. Moving and Trucking in 1947, then bought the name and two trucks of A&P Trucking Corp. After legal wrangling with the A&P grocery chain in the 1950s, they added a trailing A to make A-P-A.The name is Portuguese for National Motor Factory. It was a state-created company, founded in 1942 under President Getúlio Vargas, so the name describes its role as a national engine and vehicle maker. Its trucks were nicknamed "Fenemê", the spoken form of the initials.
