Name originThe name is Portuguese for National Motor Factory. It was a state-created company, founded in 1942 under President Getúlio Vargas, so the name describes its role as a national engine and vehicle maker. Its trucks were nicknamed "Fenemê", the spoken form of the initials. The Imperatore brothers began as Imperatore Bros. Moving and Trucking in 1947, then bought the name and two trucks of A&P Trucking Corp. After legal wrangling with the A&P grocery chain in the 1950s, they added a trailing A to make A-P-A.
