Short answer

What the Mercedes-Benz logo symbol means

The three points of the Mercedes-Benz star stand for motorization on land, on water and in the air, the aim of Gottlieb Daimler. Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft gave that explanation when it registered the star as a trademark in June 1909. The idea is credited to Daimler's sons Paul and Adolf, not to a named graphic designer, and the ring around the star became the familiar badge in the decades that followed.

The ring

A thin polished circle encloses the star. In the 2011 version it is drawn with silver gradients, so it reads as a metal rim rather than a flat outline.

The Mercedes star logo on a postcard

In the 1870s Gottlieb Daimler marked his home on a postcard to his wife with a three-pointed star. He wrote that one day it would shine over his triumphant factories. The story is why the star is often called Daimler's own symbol.

The company only needed a trademark later. After the success of the Mercedes cars, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft still had no mark, and Daimler's sons Paul and Adolf proposed the star. The board accepted it in June 1909 and also registered a four-pointed version. Only the three-pointed star was used, and it appeared on cars in 1910.

Mercedes star points for land, water and air

The explanation of the three points comes from Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft itself. Gottlieb Daimler wanted small, powerful engines for every setting: on the road, on the water and in the air. Each point of the star is one of those three, so this is a documented company explanation, not a later guess.

The name of the cars has a different origin. Mercedes comes from Mercédès Jellinek, the daughter of Emil Jellinek, who sold Daimler cars and raced them under that name. DMG began naming its cars Mercedes in 1902, which is why the earliest archived mark is a plain oval with that one word.

Where the Mercedes logo ring and laurels come from

The star did not always sit alone. In 1916 it was set inside a ring with four small stars. The laurel wreath belongs to the other half of the company: Benz & Cie. registered the letters BENZ inside laurels in August 1909. When the two companies merged on 28 June 1926 to form Daimler-Benz, the new badge placed the star inside those laurels with the words Mercedes and Benz.

The plain ring-and-star symbol is dated by the archive to 1933, and Wikipedia says Daimler-Benz registered it in 1937, so the exact first use is uncertain. The current logo shows the star and ring in polished silver above the serif wordmark.

Frequently asked questions

Mercedes-Benz logo symbol questions answered

What does the Mercedes-Benz logo mean?

The three-pointed star stands for land, water and air. Gottlieb Daimler wanted small, powerful engines for all three, and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft explained the star that way when it registered the trademark in 1909. The ring around the star was added later.

Who designed the Mercedes-Benz star?

No single graphic designer is credited. Daimler's sons Paul and Adolf suggested using the star, which their father had once drawn on a postcard, and the board accepted it in June 1909.

Why is there a laurel wreath in old Mercedes badges?

The wreath comes from the Benz & Cie. emblem. After the 1926 merger the new badge placed the star inside those laurels.

Where does the name Mercedes come from?

From Mercédès Jellinek, the daughter of the Austrian businessman Emil Jellinek, who sold and raced Daimler cars under that name. Benz refers to Karl Benz.

Is the star on a Mercedes a hood ornament?

Both exist on Mercedes-Benz cars: the star appears as a radiator or hood mascot on some models and as the ring-and-star badge in the grille on others. This page covers the symbol, not the placement on each model.
