Most Expensive BMW Cars Sold at Auction: Analysis
Provenance and rarity outweigh age
The 507 owes its lead to Surtees’ ownership as well as to its rarity. The M1 Procar and the 2023 3.0 CSL are both low-mileage cars from very small runs, which explains how they pass pre-war 328s. For the marque background see our BMW history.
A cautious ranking
Fees, currencies and sale dates differ, so close neighbours such as the 328 and the E30 M3 should not be read as a precise order. Several models have higher unconfirmed reports, which this list leaves out.
Important context
- The 507 sold for more than twice as much as any other BMW on the list.
- Limited and race-bred cars (M1 Procar, 3.0 CSL, 328) fill places two to four.
- The 2023 3.0 CSL, a modern 50-unit car, outsold every pre-1990 BMW except the 507.
FAQ: Most Expensive BMW Cars Sold at Auction
What is the most expensive BMW ever sold at auction?
John Surtees’ 1957 BMW 507 sold for £3,809,500 at Bonhams in July 2018, which Bonhams described as a record for a BMW.
What is the most expensive BMW M1 sale?
Broad Arrow reported a record $1.6 million for an unraced M1 Procar in August 2025. Press reports put the total with buyer's premium at about $1.76 million.

At auction, yes. The 2023 car sold for €1,017,500, while the confirmed 1975 Batmobile result here is $291,000.
Why are the prices in different currencies?
Each result is shown in the currency of the sale. The order uses approximate US-dollar values at the time.
Sources & methodology
One auction result per model, taken from the auction house's lot page or sale release, in the currency of the sale and not inflation-adjusted. Houses differ on whether the headline figure includes buyer's premium; the note on each entry says what is known. Order follows approximate US-dollar value at the time of sale. This is a list of confirmed results, not a full record search, so a higher private or unpublished sale may exist. Mixed currencies are not charted.
