The World's Best-Selling Cars of All Time, Ranked: Analysis
Corolla's lead depends on a broad nameplate
Toyota counts every body style sold as a Corolla, so the 50 million+ total covers sedans, hatchbacks, wagons and coupes. Volkswagen's Golf and Passat totals and Honda's Civic and Accord totals follow the same nameplate logic, which keeps the first five places comparable even though the wording shifts between sold, built and delivered.
Pickups, older runs and gaps shape the list
Published Ford F-Series counts of roughly 40 to 43 million would outrank everything below the Corolla and Golf, and the Hilux is also above 20 million by some tallies, but both are pickups and sit outside this car list. The Camry and Fiesta may also exceed the lower places, yet the makers have not published a recent total, so they are left out rather than estimated.
Important context
- Corolla's 50 million+ is about 13 million ahead of the Golf, the closest rival.
- Volkswagen and Honda hold five of the ten places, and Europe supplies six of the ten nameplates.
- The Beetle (1938–2003) and Model T (1908–1927) are the only finished runs in the top ten.
FAQ: The World's Best-Selling Cars of All Time, Ranked
What is the best-selling car of all time?
The Toyota Corolla, with more than 50 million units sold since 1966 according to Toyota's 2021 milestone.
Why is the Ford F-Series not on the list?
It is a pickup, not a car, and is excluded here. Published totals for it vary between roughly 40 and 43 million.
How many original VW Beetles were built?
Volkswagen records 21,528,480 original Beetles, ending with the last car built at Puebla, Mexico, in July 2003.
Why are the Camry and Fiesta missing?
Toyota's last Camry milestone is 10 million in 2005, and no maker-published Fiesta total could be confirmed, so neither could be ranked honestly.
Sources & methodology
Manufacturer-stated cumulative totals for passenger-car nameplates, as of the date each maker published them. Makers mix "sold", "built" and "delivered", and most state a floor ("more than"), so the chart plots the stated floor and the figures are not exact tallies. Pickups (Ford F-Series, Toyota Hilux) and vans are excluded. Toyota Camry and Ford Fiesta are omitted because no recent maker-published total was found (Toyota's last Camry milestone is 10 million in 2005).
